20 HDR Photography Tutorials to Learn This Technique in One Day

Applied with care, High Dynamic Range technique (HDR) can create amazingly beautiful photos which blur our sense of difference between reality and illusion.

The intention is to properly represent a wide range of intensity levels found on real scenes, ranging from deepest shadows to direct sunlights.

Traditionally, an HDR shot is achieved by taking multiple images with different exposures of the same scene and merging those photos together to get the best exposed parts of each on the final image. And the results can be really incredible.

5 Pillars of Post-Processing: Explaining The Basic Tools

Year 2013 is already at the door, and I still meet people who critique photos as “photoshopped” or “post-processed”, putting the very negative sense in this word. Like, “it’s not art, it’s not real, it’s not your merit”.

I don’t know if you have ever thought about it, but every single photo is post-processed. By you in Photoshop, or by point-and-shoot camera’s built-in processor, or by a film enthusiast who decides which chemicals in which amount should be used for film processing.

Who are World’s Most Famous Photographers?

When it comes to naming the best, the most professional, the most famous photographers of the world, it always makes me shrug, because you just can’t name all of them, and you can’t make a “top 10” list of artists of any kind, because art is not about rating.

But still, there are some famous photographers, pronounced more frequently, and knowing them is a must if you don’t want to blush in a company of snobby slightly bearded guys in hipster glasses who might ask you “So you’re a photographer? And who’s your favourite?”

So here we go.

Photo organization: How Geoff does it

Photodoto reader Geoff Coupe sent in some very helpful and detailed responses to my plea for help regarding my Great Photo Organization Project (which is still proceeding although I haven’t updated the sidebar in a little while). Here are his excellent responses to my questions (and you can read more on his blog). Thanks, Geoff!

If you’ve got a great system for organizing and archiving your growing photo collection, share it in the comments or email me a guest post for publication here. Maybe we could make a regular series of it… Thanks!

Question: As soon as I tagged my second photo I realized that I need a common taxonomy for my tags. I can’t tag some photos “Bird” and others “Birds” and still others “Winged beasts.” I need to pick a definitive tag and use it for all of my photos. How do I decide? Should all tags be plural or singular? Does it matter? Also, while I’ll be the main user of the archive for now, one day my children or grandchildren will inherit my collection, so the tags will need to make sense to other people besides myself.

Review: The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers

The DAM Book by Peter Krogh is my digital asset management bible. It is a definitive source of information about everything you need to know to get your photos organized, archived, and protected.

This book is a lot of things but let me start by telling you what it is not. It won’t teach you how to post-process your photos in Lightroom. It doesn’t include any Photoshop tutorials. It doesn’t include a camera buying guide or any gear reviews.

It will help anyone who is serious about organizing their photos get them organized.

Digital Asset Management (DAM) as Krogh defines it is: “a term that refers to your entire digital photography ecosystem and how you work with it. It comprises the choices you make about every component of your digital photography practice.” Your digital photography ecosystem is:

  • Images
  • Software
  • File formats
  • Organization
  • File storage architecture
  • Storage Media
  • Backups
  • Workflow
  • Migration

DAM has many goals including finding images when you need them, image processing, and forward compatibility.
