DIY digital photo frame

Photojojo.com this week points to a great idea for converting an old laptop computer into a digital photo frame (Popular Science). I happen to have a working late 90s vintage laptop sitting around gathering dust that I am going to convert. I’ll be sure to carefully document the entire process so that I can provide a bit more instruction than the Popular Science article did. Look for it in the coming weeks.

Weekend assignment: Night portraits

If you’ve ever taken a flash photograph at night, you probably know first hand how cold and unnatural these kinds of photographs can look. What you often end up with is an overexposed photograph of a person floating in a sea of black space. But there is a better way to make a portrait at night, the subject of this week’s Weekend Assignment.

  • One of your primary criteria when buying a new cell phone is how good the camera is.
  • You love the smell of fixer in the morning.
  • You’ve made more than 50 shots of a single subject.

  • Tourists ask you to take their picture.
  • You were insufferable for the two weeks it took to get your camera back from repair.

Photodoto Grand Opening contest winners announced

There were over 180 high-quality entries in the Grand Opening contest. Thank you to everyone who participated. It was a pleasure going through the entries even though it was incredibly difficult to narrow it down to just three who would take home the prizes. The judges were looking for technical excellence, adherence to the theme, and visual impact (the ones that really caught their eye). But these three winners stood out with unanimous appeal. So, without any further delay:

10 ways to tell if you’re a photographer

Does this sound like anyone you know?

  • 1 GB of memory lasts most people a month but barely lasts you the afternoon.
  • You know what aperture-priority means.
  • You delete more photos in a week than most people make all year.
  • You need just one more lens.
  • You’ve crawled on the ground to get a shot of something rusty.
  • Your camera equipment is worth more than your car.
  • No one else brings a camera to an event if they know you’re coming.
  • Your family doesn’t recognize you without a camera covering your face.
  • You have thousands of pictures and you’re not in any of them.
  • You’ve been up before dawn or out in the freezing cold or even done something semi-dangerous… all for a photograph.
